Tackle Obesity With The Right Pet Nutrition!

If you find that your pet binges on food through the day and seems to have no limits to eating, it is in all probability due to boredom rather than hunger. When a pet is under-exercised or shows typical signs of being a couch potato, he/she may have no other alternative but to eat to stay occupied. As a pet owner, you need to watch out for these telltale signs because it could indicate impending health disorders that could be life threatening to your pet.

Understanding Pet Nutrition

To ensure that your pet receives the best nutrition for proper growth and a long life, this is what you will need to do:-

  • Don’t blindly follow dog or cat-food labels. You need to understand that the calories or instructions given on these packets/cans are only meant to keep weight under control for your pet and despite what these branded labels or formulated foods may claim, they should not be the only source of nutrition.
  • Move over the ‘all-meat’ theory. Don’t go overboard with the proteins. Dogs and cats are omnivores and deserve superior-quality diets that are balanced with a good mix of grains, fiber, greens, meats (fish, chicken, beef). A balanced diet ensures better digestibility and fecal production.
  • While choosing pet food, don’t compromise on the quality based on the price tags. Pet foods are expensive and if you want to ensure that you are feeding your pet high-quality food with better nutrition, then you should be willing to shell out the money.
  • Dogs and cats need to drink a lot of water for the amount of exercise they do. If you pet reduces the intake of water, take him/her to your vet.
  • If pets had it their way, they could eat through the day and 24/7. As a responsible pet owner, talk to your vet to understand how many calories your pet (depending on the breed, age and size) should be consuming.
  • Morning and evening or twice-feedings for adult pets will help you monitor your dog’s intake and activity level properly. If you find that your pet is showing signs of lethargy, but is still consuming a lot of food then that’s a red flag right there. You may need to make some modifications in the diet or exercise your pet more.
  • ‘Snacking’ should only be a luxury. Give your pets a sense that they will get their favorite jerky or kibble only when ‘deserve’ it and not as and when they ‘need’ it. This will also cut down on unnecessary snacking and preservatives build-up.

A recent statistic shows that, in the US alone, nearly 45% of the pets are obese. In order to end this, it is important to understand what sort of nutrition your pet requires and tackle the obesity endemic with great caution and a great deal of dedication from the owners’ side.
